In 1947, he received a B.Sc. degree in Zoology.

From 1953 to 1955, Watson was at the California Institute of Technology as Senior Research Fellow in Biology.
 
Young Watson's entire boyhood was spent in Chicago where he attended for eight years Horace Mann Grammar School.
 
In 1988, his scientific achievement and his success as an administrator led to his appointment as the head of the Human Genome Project at the NIH.
 
Watson taught at Harvard and CalTech, and he became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.
 
Watson is unmarried.
